The United States was founded by men (and a few women whispering in the ears of their wise husbands) who had pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor for a cause they felt passionately about — liberty. They weren’t the first to have these thoughts, but they were the first to make these thoughts practical. They didn’t set out to create a perfect government. They set out to protect a resilient liberty. They knew that government was necessary. The last few years under the Articles of Confederation had convinced them that society needed a government, but they still believed wholeheartedly that government was inherently dangerous to the natural rights of individuals, so the government they created was wrapped round with checks and balances and ultimately answerable to the people through the electoral process.

I think the Founders would be very disappointed in us today because we’ve bound ourselves in government…
